Smutlancer Revenue Report: December 2021
Technically, the Smutlancers site went on an indefinite hiatus at the end of December 2021. But I also needed to finish the year’s revenue reports. It would have felt like something was left undone and incomplete. An uncrossed-off item on my to-do list, if you will.
I don’t know if I’ll bring back the Smutlancers site or community in the future. For right now, I feel like I’ve done as much as I can and want to do. That being said, the site will remain up and active for anyone who needs the resources and info.
But for now, let’s get into the reason we’re actually here, on this post…the numbers.
Kayla Lords, Sex Writer
I don’t know who I am these days as a sex writer or how much writing I really want to do. But here I am, still doing it anyway — and not doing too badly.
Freelance sex writing: $165.00
Self-published erotica: $13.17
Sponsored blog posts: $375.00
I’m less interested in being Kayla Lords as a public figure (well, if you can even call whatever it is I am a “public figure” because I don’t really know who I am in this space) and more interested in being behind-the-scenes, working on projects, creating the content (and products!) I love making. That doesn’t mean I’m not writing at all. But I won’t be focusing on it as a source of income growth in 2022.
As Loving BDSM, we generate revenue in multiple ways: Patreon, affiliate sales, podcast and blog sponsorships, and more. We prefer multiple streams of income and will keep it that way for as long as possible.

December was a much better month than November which was a pleasant surprise. It’s strange to look at these numbers and try to imagine what this year will bring because I haven’t put together the 2022 plan…yet. But that’s on my list for January, as are many things, lol.
Our focus for the year is on growth and spending time in the sweet spot of creating the content we enjoy most while maintaining the connection we have with our audience (which is very fulfilling for both of us).
The Kinkery is John Brownstone’s shop for his BDSM products, and I am his business partner. He makes the products, and I market the hell out of them.
Product sales: $1,797.15
We didn’t expect December to be as good as November, and it wasn’t. But it was literally 9x better than the year before, so it was definitely a success. We have a lot of ideas for 2022, both in terms of product and process, as well as marketing the shop. This is a “baby” that feels like it can grow into something amazing, and we’re committed to this path. Even better, we’re excited about it!
Molly and I technically “split” this revenue. And at the end, we made final payments to contributors and then split the rest, finally paying ourselves. We’d been stockpiling cash for a while, so it felt like a bonus.
I feel good about what we’ve done here. The community was amazing and inspiring in so many ways. I believe we helped a few people in our own way. And that’s enough for me. It’s time to turn my attention in other directions now. Will I be back here one day? Maybe. We shall see.
Again, Molly and I technically “split” the revenue from Obscene Ideas – it was put in the same “pot” as the Smutlancers revenue, and it was part of the split when we shut things down.
This big-fat goose egg probably says it all. Obscene Ideas still exists and maybe one of us will do something with it one day, but we’re walking away from actively working on this project. It was fun and exciting, but, ultimately, it was a failure.
Failures happen, and not all “good” ideas are actually good — especially if you can’t convince anyone else to care about it.
I still love the idea of digital products and making a thing once and then selling it many times over. But this didn’t do what we hoped it would. So we’re moving on.

I always hope for more, but I also know that November is the big month, thanks to Black Friday, which means December usually falls a bit.

As usual, Loving BDSM and the Kinkery made up the bulk of the revenue in December. Since these two spaces get most of my attention, this makes sense. In general, what we focus on is what grows. (For good or bad…) And I’m having so much fun with both that the focus has felt good, even when it’s been stressful. I can’t wait to find out what 2022 brings.
Now…let’s look at the dumpster fire that was 2021:
Not as good as November but not as bad as the summer. That feels like a win. This is visual evidence that we’re pulling ourselves out of the financial hole we were in over the summer. Will we get back to the height of our income? I hope so, and it’s what we’re working towards.
In fact, JB and I decided on a word of the year for 2022: rebuild.
I don’t want the work-life I had before: 50 hours of work per week for one client, stressed to the max, no time for the work I love. That’s not what I’m trying to rebuild here. But I do want the financial freedom I had, the sense of security and ability to take business “risks” from time to time, and the ability to invest in our personal and business lives.
That’s what we want to rebuild. And we will be smarter about it this time around. High-yield savings accounts, emergency funds, more investing and saving, etc, etc, etc. Oh, and we’ll have to pay down the massive credit card debt we’ve gone into to keep the lights on (in business and at home). But that’s a worry for another day…
Money doesn’t fix everything, but a lack of money makes everything harder. And having enough goes a long way to making life easier.
I used to feel shy saying I wanted to make six figures, but no more. Not only do I want to earn that much per year, I know I’m capable of it. Now, I just have to figure out the best path forward.
While I’m sad to say goodbye to this space and Obscene Ideas…and the writer I once was, I’m excited to find out what else I can do and what JB and I can build together.
