Rekindling the Smut Marathon

Marie Rebelle is a blogger I’ve followed for years and someone who I’ve tried to emulate in many ways. I may not be able to participate in her latest project in 2018 but I am a huge supporter of it and a big ole cheerleader (imagine pom poms and lots of jumping up and down). If you’re looking for a way to stretch some writing muscles and connect with readers in new ways, learn more about Smut Marathon and get signed up!

Years ago I was a participant of Alison Tyler’s Smut Marathon, and I really enjoyed the experience. I did it for two consecutive years, and it helped to improve my writing. I had to step out of my comfort zone and wrote stories I had never thought I would write. It opened new possibilities.

I was such a fan of the Smut Marathon that I asked Alison whether I could copy her formula for the Dutch sex blogging community and to my delight, she agreed. After four years I have decided to stop with the Dutch writing marathon, but I am rekindling the Smut Marathon, again, with Alison’s permission.

What is the Smut Marathon?

The Smut Marathon is so much… it’s a writing competition, but it’s also a marathon. When you decide to start on it, whether you are a writer or a reader, you have to be prepared to be committed for a whole year. Except that it is a competition, the Smut Marathon is also your opportunity as a writer to develop your own writing. The assignments challenge you to discover new facets and new angles of approach for your stories. You also learn more about different aspects of writing, focusing on specific details through the assignments. Besides all of this, you also get feedback from the readers and the jury, which is another way to learn.

How Smut Marathon Works

The Smut Marathon consists of 10 rounds, starting at the end of January and ending at the end of November. For each round the writers get a different assignment which they are not allowed to disclose to the public, the same way they are never to tell the public which story they have written. Readers vote and jury members rank the entries, after which a combined result is reached. Those with the lowest combined score are knocked out of the race.

However, no one leaves the race at the end of round 1, 3 or 5. We work with a classification from rounds 1 through 6, but as from round 7 the writers with the lowest scores have to leave the marathon. For each round, except rounds 1 and 2, there is a fixed number of contestants, depending on the number of contestants in the first round. Does this sound like abracadabra? Read more about it on the rules page of the Smut Marathon.

Assignments are short in the beginning of the marathon, but further down the line, as there are less writers in the competition, the assignments get longer. Assignments deal with different aspects of writing, which can range from concentrating on dialogue or dealing with emotions to writing an erotic sci fi story or a thriller.

Smut Marathon is Fun and Instructive

Most of all, the Smut Marathon is fun to do. It’s fun to get an assignment, interpret it and surprise yourself with the story you write. It’s instructive too, because it teaches you to think out of the box, to step out of your comfort zone and write a story you might never have written otherwise.

To support writers in developing their writing, the Smut Marathon site has tips & tricks you can use, whether it is for your blog posts or the stories you will write for the Smut Marathon.

Come on, challenge yourself and sign up for the writing competition of 2018!
